A recent discovery of a CPU-level security vulnerability has prompted a majority of the IT world to update their systems and networks. This vulnerability affects all computers, both personal and network servers. Here’s some information pulled from various news articles:
- Meltdown: a flaw in almost any computer or server that circumvents the hardware barrier between applications/systems and the computer’s memory, allowing hackers to read the memory.
- From Newsweek: “Users of applications could discern the content of protected areas on the chips, making it possible for hackers to take advantage of other security flaws or expose secure information, including passwords, which could mean compromising not only individual computers, but also entire server networks.”
- Spectre: bug affecting chips in mobile devices (phones, tablets) and other processor chips from Intel and AMD.
- Hackers can manipulate installed apps to leak sensitive data from the mobile device
